The International Conference on Veterinary Eligibility and Education in Asia

Dear Colleagues,

The goal of veterinary medicine is not only to ensure the health of animals, but also to ensure human health, including ecosystems, on a global scale by interprofessional collaborations.

Under the One Health concept that extends to future generations, a trans-border framework is needed in order to create policies that will prevent and control both zoonoses and cross-border emerging infectious diseases, and also antimicrobial resistance. For example, it is well known that outbreaks of emerging infectious diseases, particularly in Asian countries, caused critical problems to people not only in Asia but also in the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) has recognized antimicrobial resistance as one of the biggest threats to public health.

To solve these difficult problems, excellent veterinarians are needed. Veterinary stakeholders should nurture excellent veterinarians and send them to the world, cooperating with each other across the country. It is important not only to develop a good educational program on veterinary medicine but also build a sound system that certifies a veterinarian with sufficient knowledge, technology and experience.

To consider these situations, the Japanese Society of Veterinary Science will hold an international conference which set out major goals for promoting globalization. This meeting seeks to determine current and future problems regarding the education and qualification of veterinary experts in Asian countries, as well as to understand and share essential information for fostering veterinarians on a global stage.

This international conference will be held at the Ito International Research Center, the University of Tokyo on November 21 and 22 in 2018. The theme of this conference is “Veterinary Eligibility and Education in Asia”. The plan includes key note lectures, a panel discussion and an open symposium and is co-hosted by the Asian Association of Veterinary Schools (AAVS).

I look forward to welcoming you all to the JSVS international meeting in Tokyo!

With kind regards,

Shigeru Kyuwa, JSVS President
